What this publication does and does not do with your information — written to be read, not skimmed past.

Overview

The Candied Compass is an independent confectionery journal based in Asheville, North Carolina. This notice explains, in plain language, what happens to information when you read this website. We have deliberately built the site to collect as little as possible.

This is a static publication. There are no accounts, no comment systems, no checkout, no newsletters to sign up for, and no contact forms that transmit data from a page. If you want to reach us, you write to us directly by email from your own mail application.

The short version: we do not run advertising trackers, we do not build visitor profiles, we do not sell or share personal data, and the only thing stored in your browser is a single cookie-preference flag that you control.

What we collect

Information you give us

If you email the editorial desk, we receive the address you send from, the contents of your message, and any attachments you choose to include. We use that correspondence only to answer you, to consider a submission for the tasting table, or to correct an error you have pointed out.

Information collected automatically

This site loads no analytics scripts, no tag managers, no session recorders, no advertising pixels and no third-party embeds. All illustrations, styles and scripts are served from the same origin as the pages themselves.

Like any website, the company that hosts these files may keep standard server logs — typically an IP address, a timestamp, the requested file and a browser user-agent string — for security and reliability purposes. Those logs are controlled by the hosting provider under its own policy, and we do not use them to identify or profile individual readers.

Cookies & local storage

We use one item of browser storage. It is a localStorage preference, not a tracking cookie, and it never leaves your device.

Browser storage used by this site
KeyPurposeLifetime
candiedCompass.cookieChoice.v1Remembers that you dismissed the cookie notice, and whether you chose “all” or “essential only”, so the banner does not reappear on every page.Until you clear browser storage or change the setting

The interactive Flavor Profile Matcher and Sugar Stage Craft Lab run entirely in your browser. Your selections are held in page memory only, are never transmitted anywhere, and disappear when you close or reload the tab.

Because the only storage in use is strictly necessary to honour the choice you made, the banner is a courtesy notice rather than a consent gate for advertising technology. There is no advertising technology here to gate.

Your choices

  • Change your cookie preference. Use the Cookie settings button in the footer of any page to bring the notice back and pick again.
  • Clear it entirely. Clearing site data or localStorage in your browser removes the preference permanently. The site works identically without it.
  • Block storage. If your browser blocks localStorage, the notice simply reappears on each visit. Nothing else breaks.
  • Email correspondence. Ask us to delete an email thread at any time and we will remove it from our mailbox and archives.

Sharing & disclosure

We do not sell, rent, trade or share personal information for advertising, and we have no advertising partners. We disclose information only in these narrow situations:

  • Service providers. Our hosting provider processes technical request data solely to serve these files.
  • Legal obligation. Where we are required to respond to a valid legal request, we disclose only what that request lawfully requires.
  • With your permission. For example, if you ask us to forward a submission to a contributing confectioner.

We do not knowingly transfer reader correspondence outside the United States.

Security & retention

The site is served as static files with a restrictive Content Security Policy that blocks inline scripts, inline styles and third-party resources. There is no database behind this publication and no user-submitted data to breach.

Email correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful — typically up to twenty-four months for submission threads — and then deleted. You can request earlier deletion at any time.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or port personal data, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent. Because we hold almost nothing, most requests are satisfied simply by clearing your browser storage.

For anything held in our mailbox, write to candiedcompass.desk@gmail.com with the subject line “Privacy request”. We aim to respond within thirty days. We will not treat you differently for exercising a privacy right.

Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and similar jurisdictions may also have the right to appeal a declined request; you can appeal by replying to our decision email. European and UK readers may complain to their local supervisory authority.

Children

This is a general-interest food and craft publication written for adults who cook. It is not directed at children under thirteen, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has emailed us, contact the desk and we will delete the correspondence.

Changes to this notice

If our practices change, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. Material changes will also be flagged on the front page for at least thirty days. Continuing to read the site after an update means the revised notice applies to your visit.
