Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or reading The Candied Compass (the “Site”), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree with them, please stop using the Site. The Site is published from Asheville, North Carolina, United States.

These terms work alongside our Privacy & Cookie Notice and our Editorial Disclaimer, both of which form part of the agreement between you and the publication.

Use of the site

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to read the Site and to use its interactive tools for your own private, non-commercial enjoyment and home cooking.

You may print a single copy of an article for personal reference, and you may quote short excerpts with clear attribution and a mention of The Candied Compass. Everything else requires written permission from the editorial desk.

Our content & ownership

All text, illustrations, artwork, page design, the Candied Compass emblem, the flavor-family taxonomy and the interactive widget code on this Site are owned by The Candied Compass or licensed to it, and are protected by copyright and related rights.

  • You may not republish whole articles, reproduce our illustrations, or mirror the Site.
  • You may not use our artwork or writing to train a machine-learning model or to generate derivative commercial products.
  • You may not remove attribution, watermarks or credit lines from anything you are permitted to quote.
  • Recipe techniques and general culinary facts are not owned by anyone; our particular expression of them is.

Acceptable conduct

While using the Site you agree not to:

  • Scrape, harvest or systematically download content by automated means beyond ordinary search-engine indexing;
  • Attempt to interfere with, overload, probe or gain unauthorised access to the Site or its hosting infrastructure;
  • Introduce malicious code, or attempt to bypass the Site’s Content Security Policy;
  • Impersonate the publication, its editors or its contributors, or imply an endorsement we have not given;
  • Use the Site in any way that is unlawful or that infringes another person’s rights.

Submissions & samples

If you send us a letter, a photograph, a recipe idea or a candy sample, you confirm that you have the right to share it and you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to read, discuss, quote and photograph it for editorial purposes. Sending something does not oblige us to publish it, and we do not return samples.

We never accept payment in exchange for coverage, ranking or a favorable tasting note. Any commercial relationship that ever exists alongside editorial content would be disclosed prominently in the relevant article.

No transactions. This Site is a magazine, not a shop. There is no cart, no checkout and no price list. Anywhere you see a candy described, we are describing it — not selling it.

Accuracy & availability

We work hard to keep temperatures, techniques and tasting notes accurate, but confectionery is sensitive to altitude, humidity, equipment and ingredient variation. Information is provided as general guidance and may not match your kitchen.

We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the Site, including the interactive widgets, at any time without notice. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access.

Third parties

The Site intentionally contains no third-party advertising, embeds or tracking. Any link that leaves this publication — for example an email address belonging to a maker we mention — leads to a destination we do not control, and we are not responsible for its content or practices.

Disclaimers

The Site and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Working with boiling sugar carries a genuine risk of serious burns. Nothing on this Site is professional culinary instruction, a safety certification, or medical, nutritional or dietary advice. See the Editorial Disclaimer for the full statement.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, The Candied Compass, its editors and its contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the Site or reliance on anything published here.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the greater of ten US dollars or the amount you paid us to access the Site — which, because the Site is free to read, is ordinarily nothing. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Governing law & changes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and you consent to that venue.

We may revise these terms as the publication evolves. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and continued use after a revision constitutes acceptance. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in effect.
